Pitigliano is a typical Maremma hinterland town, and it has a striking view with houses built vertically on the edge of a tufa gorge in which they seem like a natural continuation. The town is sited in the shadow of the magnificent Orsini Castle , flanked with the imposing Medicean Aqueduct, characterised by the Jewish ghetto and encircled by old paths carved in the tufa ( Vie Cave ).

Places to visit:

Orsini Castle : inside the palace there are two museums: Diocesan Museum with sculptural and pictorial works and a rich collection of sacred valuables, and the Civic Archaeological Museum with an exhibition of the Etruscan finds discovered mostly in the Poggio Buco necropolis excavation (7 km from Pitigliano).

Vie Cave: the whole region is surrounded by a set of old paths sunk in the tufa, called Vie Cave . Probably this unique and striking Etruscan paths had different uses: they led to spiritual meeting places, linked up the villages and served for defence. Till 50 years ago, they were used as normal lines of communication, so they were passed through by horses and donkeys and, in fact, on some of the walls there are signs of the carts.

The most clearly marked and easily accessible are at least 8 and the most striking of all is the one that goes from Pitigliano to Sovana, the Via Cava of San Giuseppe .

Synagogue: another peculiar characteristic of the history of Pitigliano is the permanence from 1500 of an important Jewish community, as testified by the recently restored Synagogue, the bakery of unleavened bread, the Israelite cemetery, the recently constituted Museum of Jewish culture and the undergrounds of the Synagogue: the kosher butchery, the dyeing, the ritual bathing and the wine cellar. That's the reason why Pitigliano was nicknamed Piccola Gerusalemme (“little Jerusalem ”).
